Maaijke, a young Dutch woman born in 1815 in Spakenburg, vividly imagines herself into other places and times. When her concentration fades, she finds herself back in her own time and home. During one of her time travels, she meets Peter, a U.S. Navy pilot and Vietnam veteran. After an intense, fleeting love affair, Maaijke disappears — leaving Peter heartbroken.
Years later, Peter finds her again. But just as before, she vanishes. Struggling with grief, Peter throws himself into his surgical career and finds love again with Celia. A happy marriage and three children later, Peter stumbles across a letter from Maaijke claiming he is the father of her sons. As he investigates, he uncovers eerie genealogical and genetic links that hint at the impossible: that he might be his own ancestor.
In a final, emotionally charged encounter with Maaijke — this time with Celia at his side — the story challenges the very nature of reality, fantasy, and love across time.
